Hello!!

We are trying something different!  I will be looking for original posts and comments as we continue our Literature Circles on the Medieval Ages.

  1. I was surprised that Adam found it puzzling when Emilie would have to marry whoever she was told to, not who she wanted to.Because that was how it was, and especially if you were royalty the parents would choose and usually for the family's benefit. I think Adam would know that already because that has been happening for a long time especially in the medieval ages.

    1. Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. In like princess stories that I have read, they always had the marry a prince, or someone more powerful. Adam should have known that especially since he is the minstrels son.

    2. I was also surprised especially because I expect that Roger would've told him. When Adam first met up with Roger and discussed where they would go, I'm sure Adam would've asked for details. Also, Adam's father knew many people and Adam himself seemed to listen in on what others were saying. So I would assume that he heard this information from somewhere.

  2. Did you guys ever wonder why Jankin was betting on Bayard? I think he was betting on Bayard because he kind of wanted a connection to Roger and Adam. That's why Jankin asked if they were going to the Giles's Fair.🤩

    1. I wonder if Jankin was betting on Bayard because he needed a horse himself. Maybe he wanted to get around quicker and thought that if he entered the bet, he had a chance of winning.

    2. I agree with Petra and he could have thought Bayard was a better horse, and would make Jankin win.

    3. I think he is just a bad guy that gets caught up in betting on things. When Rodger told Jankin he would bet away Bayard for his money back, it was a good deal to Jankin.

    4. I agree with Petra because horses are very good for travelling in those days and very popular.

  3. When I read the part where Roger asked Adam to translate Latin for him, I was a little shocked. I would've thought that because Roger was a minstrel and he travelled places, he would've known the Latin language a little better. If you were Adam and Roger asked you to translate Latin for him, how would you feel? Explain.

    1. I think I would feel dumb because I think Adam should be able to read Latin and not have someone translate for him.

    2. I would feel kind of ashamed and not really know what to say.
I personally get really upset when parents are disappointed in me.

  4. If you were alive during this time period, what role would you like to play? ex. minstrel, knight, squire, etc.

    1. I think I would like to playa knight because it would be really fun to fight people and protect people from danger. I think I would be a good knight.

    2. I think I would want to be a minstrel because they travel across the country and meet tons of people. They are adventurous and are willing to spend time with others.

    3. I would like to be a Knight because then I could use swords and learn fencing also I could fight for people, and a sword is pretty close to a lightsaber so I think I would be good at using a swords.

    4. I would say minstrel because of all the fun travelling and since Roger is a minstrel, we get to learn the most about them and their journey.

  5. What was your first thought when the author described Rodger as being gloomy? What did you think happend?

    1. My first thought was that he had been told that he wasn't doing his job properly. He seems like a person who is quite proud of the way they do things and if someone told him he wasn't doing his job properly, he probably wouldn't get over it.

    2. I just thought maybe he did something bad or someone got upset with him. But I didn't think about it too much because when stuff like that is said, I usually just think, "oh something happened."

  6. In those days,(and up till pretty recently) women haven’t been considered equal. They talked about how women “should just do what they’re told.” Why do you think women were considered “not equal?”

    1. Maybe people thought that they weren't capable of doing the jobs that men could. Men believed that they were physically stronger than women and that they should be the ones to go to work.

    2. I think they weren't equal because they weren't as strong as Men. Also, when God created the world, he created a man first.

  8. Do you think Jankin will steal Nick? Explain.
I got rid of this one by accident

    1. I'm not quite sure what to think because he already has the horse, Bayard, and stealing Nick would mean more work. However, he did seem pretty eager to bet on Nick and why else would he have asked if he didn't want the dog.

  9. DAY 2:
"Though he was pinning his hopes on the castle, he did not fail to look around every corner along the way and over every fence. He lagged quite a bit behind Roger, and was just going to run to catch up when he glanced down a rather unpromising little lane and saw something that brought him up short, tense in every fiver. It was just a glimpse, but is was unmistakable. There at the head of the lane, was the wiry figure of the minstrel Jankin and, balky at the end of a leash, the sturdy, silky, floppy-eared dog Nick."
I think this is important because it was the start of excitment from finally finding Nick, and the next problem of loosing Rodger.

    1. I agree with you and think this is very important to the book. It shows how much Adam cares about Nick and would do anything to get him back.

    2. I agree with you because this is the start of he big chase to find nick and I think that Adam would have been really sad if he could not find nick.

    3. I agree with you because it’s a very cool part of the book because it’s like the start and the end if that makes sense.:)

    4. I also agree with you on how this is important. It's definitely a main event and changes the course the book was taking before.

  10. “Watch them for me.” He said to the friendly women.
    Then he dived.
When he came up and blew the water out of his face, he heard a babble of voices on the dock behind him, and saw the ferryboat with Jankin and Nick looming high in the water far in front of him. Then he set himself to the job of swimming to the other side. The current was swifter than he expected and his clothes were heavier. Furthermore, he had already had a long day, and he was tired.
I think this section is important because it’s the title of the chapter and it proves how much he cares for Nick. He had the courage to go after the ferry because he cares for his dog so much. I
also chose it because it leads up to the next chapter. Do you agree with my choice?
    Explain.

    1. I agree with your choice because like you said, it's the title of the chapter. Also, it really does give us an accurate idea of just how much Adam loves his dog.

    2. I agree that Adam loves his dog, and him diving into the water proves how much he loves nick.

    3. I also agree with you. I think it also shows how much Adam cares for Nick. He will do anything to get him back.

  11. I thought that the last chapter we read was really important. The reason I thought it was really important is because it shows how much people help out Adam. Adam was in trouble and wherever whenever he needed help, people were always there to help him. For example, the woman by the bridge offered to wait for the next ferry so he could go chase Jankin. Then, when he got to the other side, Jill and John took him in as if Adam was their own child. Lastly, when he went to go look for Roger, the guy at the castle gatehouse tried to help him find Roger, offered him supper, and let him sleep with him in his own bed. That was so nice of all of them to help Adam out. Adam is very lucky.

    1. I agree with you because if the nice people did not help Adam out he would have not been able to try and find nick and he would have not been fed or taken care of.

    2. I agree with you in how this is important. I think the fact that people are willing to help out Adam will definitely come up later in the book.

    3. I agree with you that Adam is very luck to have people to take care of him. People are willing to help Adam find his dad and dog. I would probably want to help him too.

  12. I very much like that when Adam left the house he was staying at he found Roger. I am happy that the author did that because to loose your dog is sad but then to loose you dad is even more sad so I think is is nice Adam found Roger. ' Adam planned as he walked briskly back along the path to Guildford just how he would find Roger. Probably they would simply run into each other in the High Street." I find it funny because that is what happens. I do say if they were still separated then it would be sad and it would be much harder to find nick. Do you agree with me?

  13. Chapter 2, Pg. 159, Paragraph 3
Supper was ample, and good enough, but afterward the bailiff called on Adam for some minstrelsy, and they all laughed even before he began. They laughed again at his songs, and called for some drinking songs instead.
I think this paragraph is important to the book because it was showing that Adam wasn't the best minstrel. This likely lowered his self esteem and confidence, which might affect how he acts later in the book. Do you think Adam will remain a minstrel? Why or why not?

    1. I think he will because Roger is and then he can keep travelling with him or else I think he would have to go back to school and I thinks he likes being a minstrel.

    2. I think he will remain a minstrel to make Roger proud. But you never know;)
